The Department of Instrumentation and Control is established in 1991. The department is offering an undergraduate program since 1991 and has started the post graduate program with specialization in Automation.The Instrumentation and Control is a core branch of Engineering, which deals with Measurement, Control and Automation. It is a highly interdisciplinary branch which covers other major fields of Electronics, Electrical, Embedded Design, Process Control, Mechatronics, Chemical Systems, Robotics. The curriculum of Instrumentation and Control Engineering involves measurement of various process parameters, design of instruments and their applications. Further, installation, commissioning and maintenance of Instrumentation systems are integral part of Instrumentation and Control Engineering. Instrumentation Engineers are the leaders for Automation and Control. Instrumentation and Control includes electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic instrumentation systems along with automation tools like DCS, PLC, SCADA. These tools are integral part of process industries, refineries, petrochemical industries, building automation and many more. Health care is turning as an industry both at technology development and health care delivery system. Thus, Biomedical Instrumentation is also an important stream under Instrumentation.
Control, Computation and Analysis are essential aspects of any modern Instrumentation and Control system. Therefore, Digital Signal Processing, Embedded Systems, and Analytical Instrumentation are important areas for design and manufacturing of modern instruments and control systems. Growing requirement of control and computing has created a large space for “Research in Instrumentation”.Due to the multidisciplinary aspects an Instrumentation Engineer can choose a career in various core areas like Process Control, Automation, Embedded, Biomedical and IT as well.
The Instrumentation and Control Department at Cummins College of Engineering for Women is one of the best departments with its investment in equipment over Rs. 3.5 crores. The department has 3 multimedia classrooms, 2 tutorial rooms and 12 well equipped laboratories including Process and Biomedical Instrumentation, Emerson Automation laboratory, equipped with a high end DCS DeltaV system and the MEMS laboratory, equipped with softwares like Coventor, Intellesuite and Comsol, along with departmental library. Highly motivated faculty is the major strength of the department. Presently department has one Professor, two Associate Professors and 10 Assistant Professors out of which 8 have Doctoral Degree and 2 are pursuing PhD.
The Department has a strong collaboration with core industries. More than 70% of the Final Year projects are industry sponsored. The department has signed MoUs with Honeywell Automation India Limited, Emerson Engineering Exports Center and ifm engineering private limited. Forbes Marshall, a leading process industry, and Pathirakha Foundation offers award to the best project of the final year students.
Second Year and Third Year students undergo internship at reputed companies like Boeing, Cummins India Ltd, IFM engineering, Forbes Marshall, Emerson, Tetra Pak, etc. Every year around 80% students complete the industry internship. Few students from the department have successfully completed their international internship. After completion of industrial training, students get the opportunity to work on the final year project sponsored by the same industry. Some of the students also get pre-placement offer after the internship.
Industrial visits are arranged for SY, TY and Final year students to map the practical implementation of topics they study. Sessions and workshops by technical experts from industry are arranged on latest topics. The department run a ISA students chapter under which the various technical events are organized. Students participate in various National Level Technical Competitions like Robocon, Mitsubishi Electric Cup, Aeromodelling Design Competition.
Department has a good number of Patents filed/published by the staff, students and students along with their projects guides. Department also has 200+ research publications in national/international journals and conferences by students and staff.
All students are placed in core companies like Emerson, Honeywell, GE, Siemens, Thermax, Air Products, Tata Projects, Forbes, KPIT, Alfa Laval, Infosys, Cognizant Technologies, IBM, Wipro Technologies, GE, Aditya Birla are few of the recruiters.

1. Process Instrumentation Lab
The Process Instrumentation lab is a significant lab of the department. It is utilised for conducting practicals of core subjects of the department. For second year, practicals related to sensors and transducers are covered. The students work on process control equipments in the third year. In the final year, students get hands-on experience of working on pilot plants found in process industries. The lab is equipped with Automation tools like PLC, SCADA and DCS of the make which are popularly used in most of the industries. Building automation setup is a part of this lab. The lab is used by students working on minor and major projects. This lab is equipped with setups supported by major industries like CIL, Emerson, Forbes Marshall and so on. Following are some of the major equipments in the lab.
Level and flow pilot plant, PLC with control panel, Ultrasound Equipment, Flow loop, Steam and Water Analysis System Panel, Distillation Column, Heat Exchanger, Radar tank Level Gauge, Building Automation Setup.
2.Automation Centre
The Automation Center provides hands-on experience with the Distributed Control System by Emerson – Delta V DCS. This is the most important lab for an Instrumentation Engineer, as the experiments carried out in this lab are directly related to the industry. This lab is interfaced with the pilot plant, which provides the student to work on a real time system. Final year students utilize this lab for Industrial Automation Lab and projects. Workshops are also conducted for students along with other college students.
The Automation Center is equipped with DeltaV 14.0 Distributed Control System having one Precision 5820XL, Tower Dual/ Quad Monitor Workstation and three Optiplex 3050 small Factor Tower Single Monitor Workstation. MDPLUS DCS controller with 16 Analog Inputs (HART supported), 8 Analog outputs ((HART supported). 8 Discrete Inputs, 8 Discrete outputs, Two port H1 Fieldbus card and 2 port serial communication card.
This lab is supported by Emerson Engineering Export Center
3. Embedded System Design Lab
The laboratory has 22 Computers with Windows OS, 2 network printers, 5 units of Aplab 5 in 1 Test Instrumentation, 8051 kits (25 no.s), SST89E516RD kits (10 no.s), AVR8535 kits (10 no.s), Add On boards of ADC, DAC, LCD display, LED display, Keyboards, Stepper motor. The softwares in the laboratory are Keil uvision, Flash Magic, MP Lab, Microsoft Visual C ++, Microsoft Office, AVR Studio, SinaProg, SST Flash, NI Labview software v2016, and Comsol Multiphysics. The laboratory resources are utilized for courses of F. Y. M. Tech (Industrial Internet of Things), T. Y. (Embedded System Design), S. Y. (Programming Practice) and Final Year Projects in Semester I. In semester II, laboratory courses of T. Y. (Embedded Product Design, Computer Organization, Mini Project) and Final Year Projects engage this lab. This lab is also used for Placement activity in free slots.
4.Digital Signal Processing
The laboratory has 21 Linux based Computers with 2 network printers. All the PCs are having internet connection. Licensed MATLAB is installed on all the PCs. The laboratory also has Digital Signal Processors Texas Trainer kits.
The laboratory resources are utilized for courses of S. Y. B. Tech, T. Y. B. Tech (Digital Signal Processing Lab), Mini projects and Final Year Projects. This lab is also used for Placement activity in free slots.
5. Electronic Instrumentation Lab
Laboratory Resource Equipments: 5 in 1 test labs, 9 in 1 test labs, Power supplies, signal generators, function generators, distortion meter, universal counter, LCR meter, CROs
Utilization of Laboratories: S.Y. – Linear Integrated Circuits, Electronic Instrumentation and System Design ; T.Y. – Power Electronics and Drives (Program Elective), Mini Projects ; Final Year Projects
6. Analytical Instrumentation Laboratory & Dark Room
Instruments & Equipments: The Laboratory is divided in two part normal laboratory and Dark room, Dark room has Optical test bench with mounts, Optical power meter with 3 photo detectors, Optical fiber test bench, Optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR), Different optical sources, He-Ne lasers, Nd-YAG Laser, Argon laser and AI Laboratory has Analytical Instruments like Spectrophotometer, Spectrofluorophotometer, Flame photometer, Photo colorimeter, Optical densitometer. The laboratory is utilised for S.Y.B.Tech Analytical Instrumentation Practicals and S.Y.- Electronic Instrumentation and System Design Tutorial.
7. Biomedical Instrumentation Lab
Biomedical Instrumentation lab is equipped with ECG Machine, Blood Pressure Measurement Unit, Bedside Monitor, Electrosurgical Unit Drip Rate Meter, Centrifuge Machine, Blood Cell Counter, Nerve Simulator, Glucometer, Apnea Monitor, Biosignal Test Station, Phonocardiograph, ECG Simulator and Audiometer . Lab is also equipped with advanced instruments like Power lab advance teaching scheme for Biomedical Engineering, EEG Machine(Neurowin), National Instruments NI_Elvis. . This lab is utilized for S.Y. B.Tech, T.Y. B.Tech and Final Year B.Tech students for practicals ,projects and biomedical research.
8. Project Engineering and Management Lab
Total number of workstations are 20. This lab is dedicated to Process Engineering and Management. PEM is a subject where you study all types of documentation required for developing a plant. This plant can be a Sugarcane Industry, Pharmaceutical Industry, etc. The documents we can create are Process Flow Diagram, P&ID, Instrument Index, Specification Form, Loop wiring Diagrams, etc. This lab will give you a detailed idea about all the processes present in This lab will give you a detailed idea about all the processes present in developing a plant.
9. Post Graduate Lab-I
Post Graduate -I Lab is equipped with high end Computers, Printer and LCD Projector. The lab is having a battery back of @6hrs. All PCs are installed with updated versions of Matlab 2020b and Linux. The lab is always occupied with students for their TY, Final Year and MTech projects along with various subjects laboratories. The Special facility – Virtual Lab Nodal Center (VLNC) is executed from this lab. It is an Initiative of the Ministry of Education Under the National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT). It provides remote-access to Labs in various disciplines of Science and Engineering.
10. Post Graduate Lab-II
Post Graduate Lab -II Lab has various high end instruments like Audiometer, Thermal Camera and Lens, PCs, OTDR, DSO, Two setups of Power Lab Advanced Teaching Scheme for Biomedical Engineering. This lab is utilized by S.Y. B.Tech, T.Y. B.Tech and Final Year B.Tech students for tutorials, practicals and projects.
11. Special Facility: Instrumentation Projects Lab
The Project Lab. is equipped with CNC milling/drilling machine, Intel core PCs Tektronic DSOs,9-in-1 test labs,Universal calibrators, PCB drilling machine, Temperature controlled soldering stations and de- soldering stations, Presentation projector-tool. The lab is always occupied with students for their TY, Final Year and MTech projects. The lab is also used by the interdisciplinary students for doing projects for competitions like ROBOCON, AeroDesign-Challenge, BAHA, EPICS. The Workshops like Product development , power supply assembling and testing, are conducted in the project lab. The lab is equipped with various advance sensors and systems like optical encoders, Danfoss VFD with motor, PMDC motor with drive, digital dial gauge, proximity switches, linear potentiometric sensors, Universal programmer, in-circuit emulator
12. Special Facility: Cummins MEMS R & D Centre
Total number of workstations are 10. We Have Cummins MEMS ( Micro Electro Mechanical System ) R&D centre sponsored by IISC Banglore under NPMASS programme . This lab is equipped with Comsol Multiphysics software. Comsol Multiphysics is used to simulate micro sensors and actuators in instrumentation and interdisciplinary fields. Lab is used to simulate minor projects of S.Y. B.Tech. and T.Y. B.Tech. students and major projects of final year students.

Newsletter
The Department of Instrumentation and Control every year publishes a newsletter “MAPAN”. It is a platform for showcasing various activities carried out by the department in the previous academic year. ‘MAPAN’ forms a good way to reach the activities of the department to students and others. This letter is a mirror of the department, which shows the progress of the department. Achievements of the students and faculty members in the various fields like technical, curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular are included in it. A part of the newsletter is dedicated to upcoming technology and related excerpts. Short report about the internships completed by the students and the list of students placed in various industries is also published in it.
